Cut plastic bag use

GPG supports the new charge for new plastic bags in shops in Wales, but we were already working to reduce plastic waste before the new law came in. 'Make Penarth a greener place' winning bag design

Reducing the use of plastic bags in Penarth was one of the first projects tackled by GPG. After surveying local shops to assess usage, GPG ran a competition to design a local ‘bag for life’.

Alex Smith of Fairfield Primary School created the winning design. With a grant from Penarth Town Council, 600 bags were made. 300 were given to children who had taken part in the competition and the remainder sold at £1.50 each. There are still a few available from shops taking part in the Shop in Penarth scheme.
